Milliken

The neighborhood we're introducing this time is Milliken Meadows, located north of Steeles Ave. and south of Highway 407, with Kennedy Rd. to the west and Markham Rd. to the east. The terrain in the neighborhood is gentle, without any valleys or rivers, which might seem somewhat dull, but the evenly distributed parks provide residents with leisure destinations. The population density here is relatively high, and there are quite a few schools, including 7 public elementary schools and Milliken Mills Secondary School. Additionally, Middlefield Collegiate Institute is a high school with a significant number of students of Indian and Pakistani descent.

The housing types in the area are primarily detached and townhouses. Speaking of Milliken Meadows, one cannot ignore the influence of the South Asian community. Due to the concentration of South Asian residents, there are many restaurants, supermarkets, and community centers with South Asian characteristics. The mosque located on Middlefield Rd., south of Steeles Ave., is an important reason for the settlement of South Asian immigrants in this area. Like the Chinese community, South Asian parents are relatively strict about their children's education. I remember watching several North American television broadcasts of spelling bees where South Asian children often won the championship. Due to the support of the residents in the area, the local representative is also of South Asian descent. I remember a few years ago, a gentleman from Pakistan bought a house from one of our clients. When asked about the reason for coming to Canada, this gentleman, a thirty-something electrical engineer, said, "We like the freedom and democracy here, as well as the natural environment. It's not like Karachi, where there is social unrest and rampant corruption." It seems that our aspirations for coming to Canada are similar, although there may be differences in our living habits. However, regardless of where we come from, our ideals in coming to Canada are generally consistent. It is the integration of different ethnicities in communities that fosters Canada's multiculturalism.
